farmall 460 gas gauge not working

How can I test gas gauge on farmall 460, When it has full tank it registers about half full at best, if I hook up a 12 volt power to gauge should it read full?

Yes, pull the wire off the sending unit on the tank, and then connect that wire directly to ground. The gauge should read FULL. If it doesn't, the gauge itself is faulty. If it does, the sending unit in the tank is faulty.

Since the gauge reads 1/2 full when the tank is actually full, I'd guess it is the sending unit at fault.

On some of these Farmall tractors, you need to know the maker of the gauge and sending unit. Seems like there were two different makers, and one makers sending unit is not compatible with the other makers gauge, and vice-versa.

Think we got it guys, Thanks, not sure what my boy did but my boy removed sending unit and it seemed to work fine, put it back together and reached in with a clothes hanger and raised it up an gauge followed it, possible bad ground on sending unit?

Yes. Very likely it was caused by a poor ground between the sending unit and the tractor chassis. I have cured similar issues on older cars and trucks by attaching a short wire to the fuel tank flange and grounding the other end to the vehicle frame.
