used hydraulic oil

i filled my 130 hydraulic unit, started the tractor and blowed out a gasket; caught most of the fluid, some is dirty. fixed gasket, back together: would you strain old oil and fill reservoir, or would you use new oil.

new you say;
but, what if it blows again, when i start it up?

Something is not right. Find out what caused the gasget to blow or it will happen again. I would reuse hyd oil ONLY in an absolute EMERGENCY.

If you can it is best to let it sit a day or so that way dirt etc falls to the bottom so you have less in it that needs strained out. I also leave the last 2 or 3 inches in the bottom of the bucket and try not to shake it up much when filtering it

I have a small electric pump with filter that I use for cleaning and reusing oil.
The filter is a standard ford/Chrysler type oil filter.

Did you just change and fill?? If that was the case I would strain/filter and reuse. I keep a bucket of used oil that I filtered and strained in the barn for emergency use. If I blow a line in the woods and need make it back and the thing is leaking I would much rather leak out used oil than new.

If you "blowed a gasket" and your shorts caught most of the fluid, some dirty, would you strain the old fluid and refill your own reservoir (belly) with it? Hydraulic systems really don't like dirt. Find the problem, fix it or it will just do it again, then refill it with new oil.
