Super M Transmission

Are the 4th/5th gears in a farmall m the same in a super m? i need to replace them in my super m and wasnt sure if the gears out of a m would work.

The answer is complex. Generally no. The gears must be replaced in pairs to match wear patterns and tooth count. There are several optional M gear sets, thus giving many ratios. Whole trans full of gears do interchange, if I recall, but mix and match is much more difficult. Jim

To further qualify that no, 5th gear is direct drive, 4th on most Super M's is a lot faster than 4th on a regular M. With the Super tractors IH was trying to encourage the farmers to upgrade the tractor and keep the same implements. With the additional HP of the Supers you used the same implements but traveled faster getting more done per hour.

If wanting to change just some gears another SM or a SW6 is all that will work. If changing the input shaft that the 4th and 5th sliding gear locks to for 5th. Later M is the same. Previous M will work if you also use the M input shaft bearing housing. But they have a smaller front bearing that supports the input shaft than a late M or SM. M first sliding gear is the only gear that will interchange in a SM transmission if nothing else is changed over.

Low low first and reverse sliding gear for a M and SM is the same. Counter shafts with first gear made on the shafts is different though. I did forget another transmission gear that will interchange, the constant mesh gear.
