1086 IH cuts off

My 1086 cuts off if I pull it down below half throttle
I had a guy tell me the injection pump may be bad in it
anyone have any other ideas
also to crank it the throttle has to be full open with some either
I just bought the tractor

Well, likely you don't want to hear this, but the throttle/connected to the IP is the interface between you and the engine.

I'm NOT sure what clean fuel/fuel conditioner/giving it some operating hours to straighten out will do to improve the situation, if not, throwing a few (LOTS) of bucks at the IP will likely straighten things out.

Put new filters on it and see what you can dump out of the old ones. How's the air filter?
Dump some power service or howe's and some 2-stroke oil in it and see what it does.
Those pumps advance the timing under full open throttle, allowing easier starting.

I changed the fuel filters today in the 1086
I have never seen a fuel filter that dirty before
if you didnt know better you would have thought I was changing the oil filters
the fuel was black and thick with chunks in them when I dumped them out
I cracked the line without the filters and it was clean fuel coming through so I wiped everythign up good and put the new filters on
primed it and now the tractor will do a good idle but if i pull it down to a low idel it cuts off and no matter what it will not start without a shot of either
unless you guys have any other suggestions I am planning on pulling the injection pump for a rebuild

Wouldn't hurt to clean out the tank, either, and get some algacide in your storage tank. The fuel goes through the primary, through the pump, through the secondary, and back to the injection pump.

The hour meter is showing 4500 hours
I want to do a true timing of the engine and injection pump when I put the pump back in
I lined the pump up before I pulled it out but when I checked the degree on the engine it is on 14 degrees
from what I have read it is supposed to be on 18 degrees and late 414 engines are set on 16 degrees
My engine serial number is 415 T T2 U153061
What is correct for my tractor it is a 1980 model
Thanks
