WA-40 brake band

I'm restoring a WA-40 and need a new brake band. Any ideals what to use for the lining? The steel band is usable if it had new lining. The drum is 2.5 x 12. I'm thinking I could make one work from a M or a W9 if they are same size. I also need a usable exhaust manifold which is different from a WK-40, the exhaust exits near the front.

I would go to a good truck or industrial equipment repair or clutch/brake shop and see if they could re-line it.

The steel band is the same as the 15-30 and 22-36, the original lining appears to be a cotton webbing so you don't need the high-strength lining with the brass wire. I bought new lining from McMaster-Carr, I ordered the metal-free lining 3/16x2.5" and 3 feet long, product number 6175K817. McMaster also has the tubular brake lining rivets.

Not more than 338 WA40s were made, so your chances of finding a good used exhaust manifold are slim. My exhaust manifold is broken and I have been unsuccessful in locating a good replacement. I have located a good machine shop that does cast iron welding and am going to send my manifold to them for repair.

Thanks for replies. I've got a usable manifold off a WK-40 but want to be as original as possible. My dad has a 22-36, WD-40,WK-40,W-40 and now I have the WA-40. The WK and W-40 have red diamonds in them at 635 and 570 CID.

Well, the Red Diamond engine is not original to the WA40, so I would just stick with the WK manifold since you already have it.

Do you run them in tractor pulls? With those big honkin Red Diamond engines they must be real horses 8) 8)

Look at McMaster and Carr online think you can buy lining and rivets cheap enough. Dad had brake shop do some last winter for a wd 9 and was like $200 they made him buy a 8' piece of lining used like. 44" then threw the rest away he was ------
