Steering rebuild Farmall A

Does anyone have pics of a steering box rebuild
from there Farmall A? I have a 1944 A that has the
square shaft steering and i was going to rebuild it
due to a lot of play and leaking oil. I have the
parts from a 47 straight A and it has the tappered
and keyeed shaft parts and I was hoping to use
those in the rebuild. Pics would really help
though. Thanks in advance. Keith in Maryland

I had a 49 Super A with the square shaft which I converted to the tapered keyed shaft. Bought the parts from the local IH dealer. Older than dirt parts man said IH used to make a kit to convert but it was NLA. But the individual parts were.
Do you have the steering arm to fit the tapered shaft, the one that sticks out the front that the tierods hook to? There were at least 2 different kinds of tierods. All these parts have to match up. I don't have any photographs, but you can find pictures in the parts manuals on line. If you search the archives, you will find lots of info on parts needed and how to do it. The sector gears are interchangeable but check for worn keyways.

The parts you need wont come from another unit. You have bushings two bearings two seals gaskets and maybe a new key for the gear. To start with have you checked the drag link to see if it moves back and forth just mite be loose on the shaft. If it moves up and down the top bearing is shot. How tight are the tie rod ends and does the steering shaft move endways when you turn the shaft back and forth as the bearing on the end of the steering shaft mite be shot. You do need to remove the axle before you can take the sector apart as the bottom section cannot be removed until the axle is out and then the draglink needs to slide off as the bottom is removed. I have done several of them and with good parts and full of 90wt they steer like new again.

I'm sure the key way and the bearings can be gotten from Motion Industries pretty easily with a little part number research (or use numbers from old ones). The bushings can be made at a machine shop if you'll remove the upper and lower castings. The gaskets should be really easy to get.

If you wanted to convert it over, get a good used shaft on eBay or parts place, then the new rebuild kits are EASY to get (for about $65.00) and come with bushings, seals, bearings, and gaskets.

DO NOT use parts from an old unit if you are rebuilding....swapping the whole front end is a different story. Will be like new in the end.
