how hard to repower a 706/282 with the German diesei of the

armand tatro

Just wondering if a German diesel (model 312?) would interchange with the 282 engine in either a 706D or 560D? Armand

Armand It would be a job, longer side rails, hood different back plate on block to mount to TA housing just for starters.

Anything is doable, but I think it would almost be more trouble than it was worth. Unless you had a really good motor sitting there with no home and had access to all of the parts necessary for this swap, I would forget it. Sell the tractor and buy one with a German if that is what you want.

Agree with balee. If you're trying to 'save money',you wont.Conversions are ALWAYS way more expencive(and trouble) than you expect.Dont aask me how I know. Cheaper to just trade tractors.

(quoted from post at 16:23:16 02/09/14) Allen are you asking if the 312 is Neuss Built? The 312 is built in America.
Just out of curiosity or for my own info, what all were the 310 and 312 used in?

The 310 was in late 715 combines, late 706 and all 756 tractors,686 depending on serial #you had 310 or 312.Hydro 70's had 312 and not sure on the 666.The 312 is the same physical size as the 360 used in the 766 and 886.The 312 is very easy to identify they look just like a small 400 series.

I was just wondering has anyone ever tried to put a 6.354 perkins in a 706? I have a gasser that needs a new motor and the perkins are easy and cheap to get out of combines. I know the front motor mounts will need a lot of work.but is the rear bolt pattern on the 263 block where the rear plate bolts on to, the same as the 6.354 block? just use the tractor for Hay raking

So if armand is looking for a German [b:8659cfa199]310[/b:8659cfa199], it should be pretty much a "drop in" fit in his 706, but if he has found a 312, it would not easily adapt?

Correct.

Pretty much everything between the front bolster and bell housing is different from the early D282 706, to the late D310 706.

If you're talking about an American D312, it's even worse. You need to mishmash parts from other newer series tractors, some of which are hard to find. You will also need to compromise on some things and cobble some things together.

It can be done with enough time, patience, skill, and money.

No, just remembering back to my days as a Massey Ferguson tractor mechanic, the 6 cylinder tractors had an adaptor plate at the flywheel housing, the 4 cylinder tractors bolted right up to the gearbox housing with no plate inbetween.
You need the plate from a 6 cylinder tractor to get the 236 (4 cylinder) bellhousing bolt pattern.

A Cummins repower is pretty easy. Leaman's Tractor Parts can set you up with a custom machined back plate, and probably most everything else to make it a bolt-in job. Even the sheet metal will line up!

It's just not cheap!
