how do i tell if i have a cut out or voltage regulator? has distributor not mag. many thanks for your input and time. scott

A 1950 M should have a VR. Verify by checking the light switch.

If it has 3 positions O-D-B (for off/dim/bright) it has a regulator.

If there are 4 positions L-H-D-B (for low/high/dim/bright) it's got a cutout.

Standard electric equipment for a 50 M was a relay or cut out to serial number 229910. 229911 and higher which was built in may was a voltage regulator.
If nothing was changed the voltage regulator mounted on the rear fuel tank support and the cutout on the generator. If I remember correct the ones with a regulator have a fuse holder button in the gage box cover and the cut out doesn't have a fuse accessed from the outside of the box.

and to add... a cutout is about 1/2 the size of a reg. and is usually mounted right on the generator, such as on the D case. dont even recall seeing a cut out on these tractors.

Usually, but not always!

A buddy of mine has a 47(?) H with what looks like a factory Delco voltage regulator mounted on the generator. However when you remove the cover there's only a single relay (a cutout relay) occupying half of the space underneath - the rest is empty space.

111676 Delco Remy cut-out was the same size as a vr you are thinking about maybe AC which had a small unit. Cut-outs had only one screw holding top on and vr had 2.

Exactly. I have one on a '40 H. Looks just like a VR until you remove the cover.

okie dokie, guess just didn't run into a cutout on ihc. other than the small ones on case and j.d.

Painfuly similar to the VR. Same housing and a Field terminal! A BAT terminal, and a GEN terminal. The Field terminal was used only with battery start and no lights. The terminal connected to the same watt and Ohm resistor that was used on the light switch to provide maintenance charging. The fact that it is there provides no end of discomfort to thse trying to novice their way through a wiring system on an early letter series. Jim
