I have been using my h for a "little" snow plowing this year. It is running ok sort of needs some tlc when it warms up now down to the reason for the post used it a week ago it ran as usual shut it down and left it went to start it today and the starter just hit and would not turn it over so I tried to turn it over with the fan belt and it WOULD NOT MOVE tried to turn the belt pulley nothing so I just for another option pushed the clutch and it started to turn over ( battery is weak so had to leave charger on it) so when the battery is up what will happen if it starts and I let the clutch out since it seems to be seized up. any help would and will be greatfuly appreciated.
 
Ever change the transmission oil? There is probably water in there that has frozen. If you start the engine with the clutch down then engage the clutch, it will either stall or you will break something.

Loosen the drain plug and ease it open a little bit to see what, if anything comes out. If you get some oil, I am probably wrong and you have a different problem. If you get water or nothing, I am probably right and you need to thaw it out and drain/flush/refill.
 
no I have never changed trans or rear end oil never had this problem all winter was using regularly just this time it was stuck
 
How cold has it been I am in New Brunswick Canada it was -40 before Christmas and it has been hittng 0 here at nights.
 
da that's sounds like a good reason too me.I never start anything that's outside such as tractor unless is in the lower +40s
 
Rat,I bought two H's years back and drained over two gallons of water out of the rear ends. Obviously they had never been drained or had oil changed. Your tractor is frozen up,get it inside and put a heater on the rear end,it will take a few days to thaw that large mass of ice. When you think it is thawed,remove the plug and water will pour out into your pail,when the oil starts coming put the plug back in,you will have drained 99% of the water. If you want to change the rear oil,then drain everything. On both my H's they leaked oil after changing it because the seal on the drive shaft was bad...nobody knew until the correct oil level was put in and then it began driping. Changing the seal can be done from underneath and its not that hard a job...get the water out regardless of what you want to do.
 
Micheal it has been colder here then it was in the last couple of weeks why would it freeze up now not when it was -40
 
Very good chance it has the same problem my Ford 841 had. Your likely to have some water in the transmission which due to this nice hot weather where not having is a solid piece of ice so yep no good. My 841 did the exact same thing would not turn over unless the clutch was held down. What I did was opened the drain plug up just enough that I had a bit if water dripping out of it and set a heat lamp next to the transmission and let it sit for a day that way. If you have a couple magnetic heaters those work well. Then once unfrozen drain and fill with new oil
 
We had an H that froze up every winter even if we drained the water in the spring. We found that the top cover had been off and the copper washers were replaced with lock washers and because the holes were recessed water was getting in by the lock washers during the summer. Replaced them with copper and problem solved.
 
Cold weather makes the tranny grease stiff and the shift lever has moved out of the rails. Remove the shifter lever by driving the pin out then you can see they arent lined up. Mite need to jack up one wheel so its not in a bind but you should be able to line the rails again. Shift slow in cold weather till you get the end of the shifter built up. This is common in cold weather
 
Been there - ice cracked the transmission housing on mine. I wouldn't take a chance - thaw it up and drain out the water.
