1566 lift pump

My son's 1566 he got recently runs good but it takes a quick shot of ether to get it cranked.
When you pump the piston on the lift pump on the rear of the injector pump, it leaks out around the pump piston like crazy. He has a rebuild kit for the lift pump, but no instructions. How hard is it to rebuild? American Bosch pump.
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

I kinda figured it was not a lift pump. That is what my son called it. The number of parts in the kit is kind of intimidating. I think that is why he wanted me to ask.
I am a JD, Ford, Case person and have only ever owned 2 Farmalls in my 61 years.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say it's the priming pump, since the real experts are being coy about it.

Definitely not a lift pump. You don't need a lift pump if the fuel delivery is gravity fed. When the tank is lower than the injection pump, as in a pickup truck, you need a lift pump.

Are you sure he didn't get a complete injection pump kit?

Just that little priming pump kit shouldn't have more than just a couple three parts.....expensive tho. Last one I got was over $50 and that's been a few years back. :>(
