Thank you to Bob M and charlieu

With Bob M's wiring diagram and charlieu's bracket I have my '52 SM converted over to 12v.

The Hitachi alternator slips right in with the mounting bracket almost like it was made to be there. Wiring was simple enough and I think it came out quite nice even on my not so pretty SM. Only other part I needed was a belt just a tad longer then stock, I think it ended up being 34 7/8".

Next project is to install the Saginaw 3-point hitch. The old SM is getting handier by the day.

Good to see another 12 V on a letter series tractor, I like it. You wont regret it, have same setup as you but a SW6. My kit also came from CharileU.

Do your self a favor and get the starter refreshed ive seen too many who went to 12v for better starting beause the starter didnt work well but 12v realy did the starting trick not knowing starter needed new brushes ect just finished one and it was on its last leg but getting commutator end done and new brushes it will last for yrs.

(quoted from post at 05:22:54 02/06/14) Do you have a link to the wiring diagram I'm interested in that

The starter has been rebuilt somewhat recently, probably in the last 10 years by the PO. It's had limited use since then.

I did everything I could to make 6v work, heavy 0/2 cable, fresh battery. Cleaned and re cleaned every connection. It would start OK spring/summer/fall but never below 30.

It was 20 out yesterday and it just rolled over no problem what so ever, better then a 80 degree day in July!

Thanks!

It could use a fresh coat of paint but is otherwise pretty sound.

(That was replying about the Barn but it applies to the SM too!)

(quoted from post at 07:32:50 02/06/14) You do already have the 3pt hitch, right?

Yup. From what he told me it was one of the last few he had. Mine was the last one before his final run.

I was looking at getting one for a few years then I heard he was getting done so that kind of pushed the issue.

I also have a Char-Lynn power steering unit. I have the torque generator, pump and mounting bracket but need the rest of the pieces. I pick things up when I see pieces at the right price, takes a while to get it all together but when you are not in the "I need it now" mode you can save a few dollars.

A hand clutch would be the last thing I would love to have but those are harder to come by. :)

I wish I had had the money to get one before he
stopped. I have one on 1 M, and a Worksaver on the
other. Its plum wore out, but still works, and I
need both, so I cant do without either right now.
