Governor on Super C

Does anyone know what commonly fails in a Super C governor that causes rpm to climb and run away? I'm not familiar with the C's and this one in particular has another spring with wire attached to the throttle pull, yes, jimmied up pretty good.

Thanks,

First the linkage from the gov to the carb must be set. Take out the pin in the gov arm going to the carb. Then with engine off open the throttle now open the carb all the way the clevis needs to be adjusted so the pin goes back in. That should help some but if the input shaft is wobbly it needs to be rebushed. While the gov is off mite be time to install a new spring. The little bearing should be OK if it falls apart replace. Those are the problems with the gov and the settings.

Broken weight or thrust bearing fell apart. Remember , the spring opens the throttle & the flyweights close it.

I've been down this road and it's no big deal to get the governor off and actually see what's wrong.

It's probably the thrust washer, but I recommend you replace the spring while you're in there because it's probably stretched and ready to break.

What gene was alluding to is "timing" the carburetor to the governor: With the tractor off, you set the throttle lever to FULL, then adjust the linkage between the governor and carb so that the pin will just slip through the clevis into the governor arm while you're pulling the carburetor rod all the way toward the front (carb butterfly fully open).

It helps to clean the holes in the clevis and the governor arm, and clean the rust off the pin so it slides easily when timing the governor to the carb.

Have you ever removed the box under the seat of your C.
How do u remove the 4 bolts that are so rusted up to separate
it from platform? Thanks for any help

Thanks for the help. I'll take it apart and check out that thrust, replace the spring, and re-align the linkage.
It has a factory snow plow, I believe a C72, you guys would know better then me, and I wish I had it to move the snow around here that we've got this year. It runs but with this other spring on there and stuff the governor doesn't work properly so as you get into the deep stuff it struggles to maintain engine speed.

Mine were not completely rusted off. I let them soak in PB Blaster for about a week. Reached in with a 1/2 ratchet and a deep socket. The back ones are the easiest to get too. My C has the fast hitch, so the two L brackets on the side were the worst to get off. Both bolts on them twisted off in the floor plate.
