F series bolt switch over

So, the F series later tractors used "dot" bolts. The early ones used the thick head, smooth bolts.

Anyone know when IHC switched over? Inquiring minds want to know........

What I tend to do on a tractor-by-tractor basis, is tractors that have original, "un-touched" bolts, determines which ones I use on that specific one. For example, my 1928 Regular, has the smooth, large head bolts on it. My 1937 F-20, has dot head bolts.

While it really isn't a crisis either way, as I like to understand these sorts of things, I am curious as to when IHC switched over.

We had this same discussion on the Cow board a couple years back and if I remember correctly we had it narrowed down to early 1936

My 1935 F20s have the dot head bolts and my 1930 Regular has the large smooth head bolts, so it must be somewhere in between.

Mostly mess with the letter and 100 series so can"t answer your question from a f series view point.
But don"t think there is a definite change over.
IH made some bolts but I think they outsourced also.
Some H and M series have the smooth head bolts, some have dot head, some with FC on the head, WP head and maybe some I missed. They can be a mix on tractors, a mix for different years, ETC.
Those are the bolts with taller heads than a standard bolt now.
Todd Markle that put out the F series tractor book says both plain and dot head can be found on late F series tractors.

Tom,The other day I was working on my early 1936 F12,and I looked on one of the bolts and I couldnt see any dot{bolt was dirty }As im typing I have a bolt that I put in my pocket and it does have a dot

thanks for all the thoughts guys. I have been going by what's on the tractor. there are certain bolts that I know have not been off or replaced. so, what ever those are, I go with for the tractor.

now, clutch pressure plate bolts, and a few other internal ones, I have not seen "dot" versions of. And yes, at times there were multiple suppliers.

I still find this to be an interesting question. I'll have to wander over to the Cowboards, and search the archives........
