SMTA axle bolt torque

Does anyone know the torque for the bolt that holds the bull gear onto the axle on my SMTA? I can't find anything in the service manual. Thanks in advance.

560 with the same size attaching parts is 280 to 320 ft. lb. But that was for bolts with grade 8 markings. Original SMTA retaining bolts don't have the grade marks so can't say for sure.
You could check standard torque charts for a 3/4 diameter fine thread bolt. But I don't know what grade to tell you. I usually go with grade five on those.
If its the dot head bolt so many different claims of the grade are around that I don't claim to know the real answer.

Dry torque for a 3/4 fine thread bolt is 138 grade 2, 223 grade 5, 315 grade 8. I strongly doubt that IH used grade 2 for that. I agree with D Slater: if you can"t figure out the grade from the bolt marking assume grade 5 (but if it has no marking at all replace it).

According to the shop manual for my 544 "dot" bolts should still have the SAE line markings.

bull gear retaining bolts M up. SMTA most likely to have the dot head or later the dot head with grade 5 marking, C with grade 5 marking or the grade 5 marked bolt with AP in the center. They could also be found in a 400 along with the IH bolt with grade 5 marks. Later on 560 used IH bolts with grade 8 marks. Can't remember or never noticed if any grade 8 showed up in later 450 tractors or if grade 5 were in earlier 560 tractors.
Bolts with the IH stamp weren't common until sometime in 1956.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I just torqued them to 550ft lbs and they didn't snap off so I think that should be tight enough. I know some don't think this is a big deal but I had a super C that an axle bolt came out of and it made a huge mess in there, ended up parting it out because it was not worth fixing and I don't ever want to go down that road again.

Just interested 2pipe, did you have a dot head bolt with no marks or any of the others pictured?
