farmall H magento

I am with Gene, why the WICO? Don't get me wrong, if that is what you want to do, then fine. but I am curious as to why that choice? Who knows, I might learn something........

Gene is on track IH used IH magnetos on Farmall H tractors. Unless there is a reason to use a Wico on it, you are probably going to have an easier time finding the IH. Jim

This ih mag on the tractor has been trouble for 20
yrs, even though is has been gone threw numerous
times, we have two h's and this one mag jusr keep
giving fits, cant remember if I was even in the
other one. The wicos on our jd's have seldom given
problems. I really enjoy my & H and have to get
going for hay season.

i rebuild mags. on the side & i will tell ya the H-4 is a way better mag. & cheaper to work on , wico., in most dont even use bearings just a bushing that is always worn out , & to the history end of this robert bosch later on american bosch designed this mag for IH , so actually its amercan bosch with IH holding the patent , the wico mags. are still avalible new for $350 or so , H-4 is no longer made new but you can get a rebuilt one from $175 to $350 depending on the new parts they required to repair , check out E-bay but beware of the guys that just get a working one and clean & paint it call it rebuilt , with no new parts , i also have a couple of my mags. on e-bay but there more costly because of all the new parts i put in them & of course e-bays outragous fees. if i can be of any help let me know , i have rebuilt H-4's on hand and would work a good deal if you send me a core or would gladly rebuild yours

what are calling a fit , normally a mag. works or it dont , a common problem with these are the washers that the condencer goes through where kill wire hooks, they crack and spark will arc to ground , good flat points is a must , set them at .025 yes i know the book says .020 but ive found .025 works better . also how does that internal wire that runs from points to cond. look , the fiber rap goes bad there too. sounds like it could be an easy fix if it works just not 100%

Swap the mags from tractor to tractor to make sure it is the mag as an issue. Cheap and definite. The mag should have a trouble free life. If it doesn't get better from rebuilding it may be the rebuilder!
They often need points as do distributors. Some seem to wear rubbing blocks more than others and will not fire well with a narrow point gap. .013"
Good luck. Jim

So whats the problem doesent it fire has the impulse been cleaned spring bad or just what doesent it do they are very good and have lasted many yrs with just a good cleaning

The mag that's giving you trouble may have weak magnets. I had an old Wico off a Standardtwin garden tractor that had weak magnets. When you touched them with a flat blade screwdriver you could tell they were dead. Hal

I have rebuilt quite a few H1 and H4 mags (same base frame, just different cap setups for 1 or 4 cylinders). I have yet to see one that couldn't be made right. The magnets in them are Alnico permanent magnets. While I have heard that on occasion, they have needed to be recharged, I have never encountered that.

Good coil, clean points, and good condenser, these puppies will throw a good spark. I agree, either the guy that went through it missed something, or something else is wrong.

btw, are you plug wires copper cored? If not, and they are high resistance graphite core, that is your problem.......
