loose 450 gas sleeves

I am doing a stock rebuild on a 281 the new sleeves slip in the block.Is this common for this engine? I bore gauged the cylinders and they are round and straight.I always use the green lock tight on dry sleeves but they aren"t this loose in other engines.Some ford engines are designed this way but my 450 manual doesn"t mention this.

The gasoline 281 engine should have a fairly heavy fit. If you can push them in by hand that is too loose. The diesel version of that engine did have a hand push sleeve,(which I never liked very well but it seemed to work ok). All the 236-282 diesel engines had a light hand push. You always had to clamp the sleeves down with head off or they would most likely move up with piston. I used to install .002, hone a little and get a nice light press fit on engines with .002 sleeves available. Never saw a .002 available for a 281 gas or diesel, from IH that is.
 

If I remember right, some of those engines ended up with differing bores. Look for a letter stamped into the top of the block, right next to each cylinder. That letter will tell you if you need a slightly thicker sleeve, and how much thicker.

I do not know the codes.
 
Nope it ain't wright and as far as Loctite Nope won't use the stuff on a sleeve . But i would bore the block and install a thin wall repair sleeve and bore - hone to fit and get the correct fit to get proper heat transfer they do not do this with a layer of plastic between the sleeve and the bore of the block. But i am not building that engine and i do not have to stand behind it . I would rather spend five six hundred bucks more the first time and NEVER have to do it a second time .
