B Farmall - steering shaft size

Does anyone know what size the steering shafts are on a B? My U-joint is really loose and I'd like to replace it. There is a bolt going through the lower end but it looks like someone welded a bead around the upper section to keep it on. Have to break out the grinder to get it off the shaft.

Is the joint worn/damaged beyond needing a new cross and bearing kit?

Unless yours is a very early serial #, I think the CIH part #84355036 kit should fix you up for about $20.

Thanks. Mine is a 1945. I'll need to look at it closer, if I remember right it didn't look like the caps would knock out to replace them but I could be wrong.

I have a '45 BN and if your joint is like mine it's not repairable.

That being said you can replace it with a universal joint. Just eyeballing it I think the joint form a M/SM would work but I haven't measured the shafts to make sure. If not there's plenty of sizes to be had.

Mine is really sloppy, I was just looking at it a few days ago. I guess that's what happens after 70 years....

(quoted from post at 10:54:33 01/31/14) I replaced mine with one from a C. Shaft size is the same.

Boy, that's almost to easy. :)

I did think of that actually, the reason I was thinking the M/SM (probably H/SH too) type is those can be had on the aftermarket, I don't see anyone selling them for the B/C/SC. I think CIH wanted a good deal more then what I saw elsewhere.

I used one of those aftermarket U joints on an early H. The original steering U joint was of the early style and non-rebuildable. You will need to drill a couple of holes through the shaft to accept roll pins. The roll pins are included.

Yeah, I think it's the same case for the B/BN type tractors.

I just need to verify that the shafts are the same, which I think they are.

I wonder why the holes don't come pre-drilled?

I looked around and I can get a universal one for $42. Not to bad I guess. And it does look like it will need to be drilled out for the pins. Thanks guys.
