Cracked Clutch Housing On H

Picked up a very straight, and original 1940 (I think) Farmall H.
S/N 74011. Stuck, but been sitting inside for over 30 years. Got it soaking and moving a little today.
Has been converted to disc brakes, using IH parts.
Noticed clutch housing is cracked from lower RH side of Liftall opening, way up the side. Looks to have been Ved out and brazed by someone who knew what they were doing! Beautiful repair, and adds character, I think.

Noticed almost every H I see is cracked or has been repaired in this area. Some with loaders, others that never have had one.
Any idea what caused this? Any differences in castings over the years?

The long torque tube was more easily cracked and /or broken when using a loader as compared to the shorter tube on an M.

I have a 544 that I bought with a cracked chutch housing. It was cracked from the clutch inspection hole on the bottom up about 1" and was fine for a long time. Than one day I was back blading with the loader a bang it broke all the way. Broke the starter imput shaft and pto shaft and bearing retaier. luckily it has a cab that kinda held the tractor up or I would of been smash.

Of the 10 or so Hs I have had only one has been cracked there, nd
that one was also repaired like yours. I still have four or so extra
clutch housings on hand.

You learn something new every day. I grew up with H's from 39 models up, and have never seen a cracked or repaired housing. I could see it happening though.

I'll bet that ol' H had a loader mounted on it at one time, and the owner THOUGHT he had a bull-dozer. I've seen several Hs with broken torque tubes. All of them with the loader still on.

Put a different center section in a M once upon a time, out in the farmers grove. Saw an H with a bow in the middle after it burned but ironically, never did replace or repair a broken H. The 45 H my dad bought new and I have now spent many, many years with the old horn loader and Dad would hit those manure piles and snow banks, with chains on the tires. Tipped it a couple times also, once when I was driving it, but still not cracked .

RustyFarmall nails it!! Sold several housings over the years, even brought a "H" in one time held together with a log chain and binder. Yes,the loader/bulldozer was still in it too-

My 1940 H has a crack that extends about one inch. It has been that way for at least 45 years. At least 20 of those years it was my dad's main tractor. Since it is not used for any real work any more I'm not going to do anything about it.
