Do I have to remove the cam to get the crank out of a 281? I have the front cover off and all the rod and mains off. will not come out! any help will be appreciated, Thanks Rusty

It may be easier to pull the crankshaft by removing the cam shaft. You may need new cam bearings and it would be easier to retime the two gears by installing the crankshaft first. If you're having the block hot dipped make sure any pipe plugs that were removed on the oil passages are reinstalled. Sometime we forget to reinstall them and you won't have any oil pressure. Hal

Gasoline or diesel. The gas engine you have to remove the front plate behind camshaft gear as there is just a hole for crankshaft. Diesel has open bottom of plate and crankshaft will come out without removing cam shaft. Takes two men and a boy to lift the crank of the diesel though.
