Super C dist.

I got bored and took my Super C distributor apart over the weekend. I was reading the lubrication manual and it says to remove the screws in the distributor and the gear housing. Then install grease zerks and grease until grease comes out the holes on the back side. First of all, there are no holes on the backside of either one. It looks like when the gear housing fills up, it bleeds over into the crankcase. I am not very keen on that. I don't see where the distributor grease goes when it is greased. The parts book and manual shows the sleeve on the inside of the distributor running the full length of the inside. How does the grease get into the inside to lubricate the shaft? If the sleeve is oilite bronze, then oil in the hole would make sense. The shaft fit and advance weights are all fine. I need some ideas on the lubrication. Thanks for your time.

When the grease gets hot from engine heat it will be oily enough to soak into the bushing. Main thing is that the gears stay lubricated. Just a half pump once or twice a year is enough. Don't over do it.

The bushing in the dist. should have a semi spiral groove . Now also your dist my get some splash from engine oil . And not need the grease gun grease . Been a long time since i worked on a C -S/C

You remove the screw install zerk grease then remove zerk and put screw back. Thats so someone doesent over grease

There is a relief hole on the back side of the dist but not on the adaptor housing you are showing in the photo. So, like you say, if you over grease that adaptor housing, yes it will go out the front but if you only grease it like book says, it would be a tiny amount over time, no problem. And the distributor, there is a well inside surrounding part of bushing and being porous it will work it's way through. One thing about those kind of bushings, they cannot be reamed as that destroys the porosity so you have to have an exact fitting bushing if you replace them.

Thanks for all the help. I went out and looked closer at the backside of the distributor. You guys were correct. There is a small hole on the back. When I got the tractor it had been thru a class A spray can overhaul. Paint had run down the back and filled the hole shut. Every time I post a question on here, I am amazed at some of the stuff you guys know!
