Is it cheaper to put a reman engine in a 986 or go with conventional overhaul? I am not doing the work myself. Thanks DTK.

It depends on how extensive of an overhaul. Do you know what exactly needs to be done? It also depends on who you are getting the reman from and what exactly comes with it. You doing the labor or will it be hired out?

Unless your engine is a total disaster, I would recommend keeping it and doing a total rebuild. I have not had good results with remanufactured engines from IH or others. Only did them when management made the decision to do so.
One knocked the mains out in few hours, one oil cooler leaked contaminating engine. Replacement for that engine, had to reuse front cover because threads were shot in mount. When taking cover off, found oil pump was bad in replacement engine. Did not have all the updated parts throughout the engine. No confidence in them. Same way with the Deere rebuilds. Just my opinion.

Had a Springfield reman engine put in my 1466 almost 13 years ago. It doesn't use oil and I haven't done any work to it in all those years. Starts down to +15 without being plugged in and no smoke at idle or pulling. Was my main tractor for about 8 years, the last five, mostly a haying tractor. If you plan on just sleeves, pistons and bearing an in frame overhaul would be cheaper, if you plan to do the cam, rods, heads and all that goes with it, a reman with warranty would be the way to go. The Springfield engine I got from the caseIH dealer had a 5 year warranty if installed by a caseIH dealer and 1 year if installed by anyone else. I had a local family shop put it in with no problems since.

Current shape of the engine matters whether the tractor needs to be split to remove the crank. Twice the labor as in frame. Parts on in frame $2,000. Just did one. Tisco parts were used. Head refurbished too.
