looking at a farmall 300 with serial #6437 dsj found this # on side of clutch housing can someone tell me about this tractor have rebuilt ferguson and ford but this is first farmall

Mid to late 1955 Look at the casting codes to be some closer. Serial Numbers and dates are to the left on this page. Jim

thanks jim owner said it may be a 52 does the DSJ stand for anything aad are parts hard to get for this model Bill

I do not know what the D stands for, the S is for TA and Independent PTO. The J is for Rockford Clutch (They almost all had the Rockford clutch, it was somewhat heavier duty)

Since the 300 was not made until 1954, I doubt it could be a '52. Owner is wrong.

i had to clean the paint off of the serial # plate so i knew the owner didn!t know what year it was you said the s in the serial # means it has ta is that torque amplifier? what does it do and is it something i should stay away from? Bill

The TA is Torque amplifier. The lever to the left of the platform, about 30 inches long with a flipper release on the grip. The TA is a 2 speed manually switched gear set between the engine and the trans. It allows a 33% change in ground speed without stopping. Lever forward is direct drive, Lever back is reduction. No clutch is needed, just move the lever as rapidly as possible. (never ease it forward or back) treat it like you were mad at it when going either into direct, or TA. The device can be used to help through tough spots in tillage, or just to adjust ground speed. It is in free wheeling when the lever is back. Do not drive down hills with it back coasting. It will run away down the hill and could crash. There is no engine braking when it is rearward. Jim

D means the tractor was built with pistons to give a higher compression to help with power output when operating in areas like the high plains. IH called it a 5000 foot altitude attachment. Original pistons probably replaced long ago. Tractor was assembled in Feb. 1955.
F-300 tractors built from 11-54 to 9-56.
Hardly any difference in a IH or Rockford clutch in a 300.

thanks jim owner is asking 800.00 for the tractor and 300.00 for the grader blade on the back he says it ran when he parked it a year ago it belonged to his father it has flat tire on the back but the tires have good tread on them do you think that price is ok BILL

BILL

ok! looks like i will put away my ferguson gray paint and buy lots of red whats the correct red for the 55 farmall or is their only one red for all the tractors Bill

Look through the Archives on the Farmall forum (where you are now) for paint numbers. I have not painted one for a long enough time to give good advice. Much depends on your method of application and the type of paint chosen. Jim
