I have a 47 H only had it a short time was looking it over the other day and noticed in the hood a hole across from the intake about the same size as intake what would this hole be used for

The hole is for the filler neck on a small. gasoline starting tank. Either your tractor was originally a distillate fuel or kerosene burner, or the hood is from one of those tractors. Check the serial number. If the serial number has an X1 suffix, it came from the factory equipped to burn gasoline, and should not have the extra hole. If the serial number has NO suffix, it was originally a distillate fuel burner, and SHOULD have the hole.
 
distilate & kerosene burners had to be started on gas to warm up, and could run on straight gas. But they also had a special manifold to heat the intake for the other fuels and had shutters on radiater to allow tractor to warm up faster and run a little on the warm side. I think they also may of had a little bit different jets in carborater.
