What kinda shifter is this on this Farmall M

My M does not a have a belt pulley on it, but my h does and the engagement for it is nothing like that (and yes I realize it is aftermarket, but I do not see how it would work with belt pulley).

Any chance that second shifter is for one of the 9 Speed auxiliary tranny's? I believe both M&W and Heisler made one plus maybe Behlen? Anyway, M&W auxiliary shift utilized a cable at some point where the Heisler was all mechanical linkage. Alternatively, Could that lever be to disengage the belly pump for when a 9-speed is added to keep from overdriving the belly pump when the 9-speed is used? FWIW: the 9 speeds gave 4 gears faster than 4th gear but slower than 5th gear. Road gear was locked out from being used. These added gears were useful for light jobs like rotary hoeing, raking, or any light job where more speed but less throttle was desired.

I believe that is an M&W live pto attachment. Had a friend who had one on a H. Worked pretty good. Pull it back, pto kept running, but forward motion of tractor stopped!!! jps

That is not the lever in question. You are correct in that the lever coming up out of the left hand brake drum is the M&W pseudo live PTO option - even the OP pointed that out.

The question is in regards to the 2nd lever by the actual gear shifter knob?

May well be belt pulley shifter.

However, I will add another possibility. Lever with linkage to set the brakes ? Reason I thought of this I think I see a rod close to brake set tab ?

Just a thought.

From what i see is a M&W live PTo. and a 9 speed doubole acting Hyd. and a hill side hitch . Now it it has P/S it would have it all . I did not notice if it had and M&W gov. on but with everything else there i would not be surprise . Looks like the Org. owner liked his TOYS .

It appears to go to the Christmas tree valve by the
belt pulley. The rod by the brake lock appears to be
a starter rod that you step on. When I zoom in on it
the rod appears to go down, bend to horizontal ,
across above the brake pedals, and then forward.
However I cannot tell from the other pic exactly
where it goes to.

That wa very handy for enguaging the belt pulley as we ground feed at least 2 times a week on the belt powered hammermill sure made it easy to enguage the pulley when backing up to tighten the belt

You still had road gear lever for that OD went into the left side of the tranny and a short metal lever was used to operate it nothing like whats in the pic as the pics lever doesent go the left side of the tranny. There was also a lever under the seat on the right side had a knob and long handle so you didnt need the hard to get factory one then you needed the quick and easy brake lock deal and you had all kinds of gadgets to make it much easier to operate the tractor.

lever is for an M&W 9 speed added to trans , have one on an H but dont have that syle handle, you can tell by where it hooks on trans case it an older syle, new style uses a cable in from front of case , wont change pulley speed but will raise PTO speed & hyd. pump speed , the way these work just gives you more speeds between 4 & 5 (road gear) all lower speads are the same , also that live PTO kit is nice but most leak oil on brakes & good luck finding clutch disks when they start slipping more of a collectors piece today

(quoted from post at 12:06:30 01/26/14) Was looking through Craigslist and found this tractor for sale near me. http://frederick.craigslist.org/grd/4245002395.html Obviously it appears to have an M&W hand clutch on it, but what is that 3rd shifter on this tractor? I've never seen that before, but figured somebody else on here would know.

If you look at the picture of the right side of the tractor, you can see where the lever "crosses over" to the right side to what appears to be a hydraulic valve... maybe for a 2 way auxiliary valve??

So are you going to buy the tractor or just posted the pic to get a storm started according to the posts most have never seen the lever add-on to enguage the belt pulley some even think its a brake lock. So are you going to buy.
