power steering on farmall M

Just installed the power steering and the steering wheel jerks. Can anyone help me with any information. Thank You

Jerks as in has a mind of its own, or jerks as in does not supply enough pressure to work smoothly?

The first is due to taking the torque motor apart and getting the innards out of phase. The second can be the nature of the beast. Throttle it up.

Hi FB--- If you please, I'd like to share a a few things with you concerning your power steering. This may not be of any benefit to you , but maybe to someone else reading this and considering adding on a power steering unit to their tractor.

This is what came with my M when first bought. The dogleg is clearly seen between the motor and the front steering shaft due to improper alignment by the previous installer due to ignorance or not caring about it. Could have been enough out of center to cause an oil leak in the motor due to stress. The coupling joint is sloppy and worn due to oscillation when the steering shaft is turned, causing a lot of backlash at the steering wheel. So proper alignment is critical.

The pump was plugged off, belt missing, and one hose missing.

Just out of curiosity I replaced the missing parts to see what I had.

And it worked just fine, but very sloppy for obvious reasons. Then, the oil leaks. The pump shaft was leaking out the front, and the torque motor also leaking rather bad. This caused the wind from the fan to blow leaking oil all over the motor. Not good, rather messy. I finally understood why the pump had been disabled. I went a little further and yanked the whole unit off, not wanting to worry about anymore leaks. I just didn't want to deal with it. It's cleaner, leak free, and not that hard to steer. I justified this by thinking that if grandpa got by without it, I can too. lol

Best regards
Patrick
