856 IH question

Hey I have found an 856 with 3 pt, wide front, full set of weights on the front, 2nd owner, good sheet metal He wants 6,500 and firm. Is that a fair price on this model tractor. Runs good, cant tell how many hrs. Any advice, decent price?

BY todays prices it is FAIR BUT what does it NEED . You could be getting a good deal or you could be getting a nightmare . How is the T/A and Clutch ?? does the engine had blow by when warmed up , how does it start cold Does it shift well ?? are the tries better then fifty percent . Keep in mind it is and old work horse , yea they were built to last BUT they are not cheap to fix. Also keep in mind that the D 407 is not and engine for the novices to do a rebuild on as they have there quarks . Clutch and T/A They are not that hard to do and do wright if someone that knows how to do them walks ya thru it . And it is like this there is nothing on that tractor that MONEY WILL NOT FIX.

Sounds cheap just make sure it don't need either to start as long as its above about 40 degrees.Or if it has a block heater and has been plugged in for a couple hours it should kick right off.

ou beet me to it TV.

If it is DIESEL and in good running condition with good tires that is cheap. If its gas in good running condition that seems high but it might be worth it. They are not a cheap tractor to work on so any issues need to be taken into consideration (brakes, clutch, TA etc..) - but then none of them that size and bigger are.

An 886 (with cab) in good condition (field ready) seems to be in the $12K range in my area now - and thats coming off the farm - dealers (as always) are 20% to 40% higher.

A good sound 806-856 will start WAY down below freezing when everything is wright . Many years back i bought a 806 fixer upper that i think the only thing it did not need was a radiator cap . I latterly had every nut and bolt out of that tractor from ft. to back , repaired rebuilt everything . When we did the engine it was a Major major deal on it as we lined bored it decked the block cut contour bores center linebored the block to take .010 sleeves installed all new valve seats and set valve heights to dead on spec.s did the injectors and the injection pump . We ended up with somuch in it we were almost hung with that tractor . Till Jan . of 78 and if i remember correctly it was Jan.28 just after the blizzard temps were wright around -20 or so a guy showes up at the shop as he heard that we had a super nice 806 for sale . The tractor was about four or five hundred feet from the shop in a three sided shed been setting there since first of Nov. when last used . We had to walk down thru four and five foot snow drifts to get to it as this guy wanted to see if it would start . Pulled the throttle about half way and pushed the button , she turned a little hard but to all of our surprise it started with no either at all and yes he did buy it for what we were asking and we spent the next couple hours getting to it and the trailer to haul it to him . When someone hands ya nice crisp green folding money of just short of 9 grand ya sorta do what ya have to . Over the years he became a good customer . Always like his way of paying CASH .

Gee my brother bought an old 856 for 3,000.00 in TX use it regularly and only put a steering pump ,main tube in the front axle, tie rod ends on it. There were a few o-rings so maybe a 1000.00 in it. Use it to mow hay, spray, bale, pull wagons and all. Probably put 600 hrs on it in the last 3 years. tin work is straight on it.

Getting a usable 856 for $3000 is pretty unusual. You've gotten your $3000 out of it so it owes you nothing even if something major takes a dive tomorrow.

Even $6500 is pretty cheap if the tractor is straight, has good tires, and seems overall ok.

An 856 Custom went for $13750 at a local auction here a couple weeks ago. That's pretty extreme, but it shows how high people will go on these sometimes.
