Steering box play on a SWD-9

I don't think there is much that can be done within the steering box. Had mine apart a couple of years ago and the internal parts were fairly tight. The box itself had a considerable amount of wear at the top hole for the steering column and some wear in the hole for the pitman (output) shaft. If I remember correctly, there are no bushings used on the shafts. A lot of slop in the steering system was found at the worn holes in the rectangular block that connects the pitman arm to the drag link. I have also seen several of them where the pitman arm is loose on the spline on the output shaft of the steering box. Did you check all of these items to ensure that the play is not form other points in the steering system?

Igot lucky on a WD-9 I had by just tightening the
pitman arm on the splined shaft but not on this
one..it seems the play is in the area of the pitman
shaft housing..

Im contemplating leaving it a lone...I ordered a
parts manual to see what is in that case..Looks
like its gonna be an oily mess when I pull the
cover off no drain plug...

Unless you have someone who can take the gearbox, set it up on a mill, bore out the holes, then make and install bushings, there isn't much you can do.
