What's your favorite spark plug for the old letter series
Farmalls. Less fouling with today's gas and show/parade
tractors with limited use.

I tried to find the hottest plug I could for my 1950 "H" parade / chore tractor. Lately I have been running Autolite 388"s, set at 0.030" to 0.035" or so, with permium gas and Seafoam, and I open her up and run her hard every so often. Based on old timer"sa advice at CNH dealer. seems to work, I guess, but I have never known what actually makes a plug "HOT". Is it the thickness or thinness of the electrode, or something else??? dunno.

In operation the tip of the plug, where the spark is, is the hottest part of the plug. The coolest point is where the plug screws into the head or block. More heat is conducted from the hot tip of the plug to the cooler part when the distance is short and conduction of heat is high. This is a cool plug. Plug construction is the opposite on a hot plug

I have been advised to run a hot plug and do so. Not sure what I am running presently. I like and use Seafoam. Why do you run premium gasoline in a low compression engine? I have done this too and don't really notice any difference. I use non-ethanol regular with good results / performance.

Autolite 3116's and copper plug wires if you have a magneto.

Autolite 386 or 387's for a battery ignition.

I use Autolite in every thing that I can get a cross match on and the ones I can't I use Champion. I use seafoam and if I'am going to work the hell out of it use Marvels Mystery oil in fuel. I will from time to time run a tank of permium through them. Had mechanic years ago tell to switch back and forth on octanes to help snap carbon.

Champion D-21's or it's equivalent in another brand.

Read what Red Dave has to say. He has it all figured out. That"s what I use and have never had a problem.

Anything except the spark plugs Dad would have used,Champion; the last set I bought lasted three days, the A/C in it now have been there ten years.

Spark plugs are like oil. Everyone has their opinion on what is best, usually not based on any data other than based on what they have convinced themselves is best.

Another vote for the 3116's. My 'M' has 6 volt mag ignition w/ cutout, starts easy, and runs like a top. Old school baby. lol I have no desire to change anything. Perfectly satisfied.

well for parades and putzing around you need a hotter plug than factory spec. I use mostly all champions as they have more meat in the thread area than the autolites. found this out when had autolite twist off in the hole. I have found defective plugs in both types and do not really notice anything greater in the autolites. any plug will foul up when the engine never reaches operating temperature. also these old tractors came with champion plugs.
