extra holes

I'm working on repairing a Farmall M that I bought last fall and look at what I have found under the battery box. These holes are through the tranmission cover. In all my years (45+)of turning wrenches on old Farmalls I have never seen this much damage caused by battery acid.

Wow,I grew up with IH and never recall seeing that either. Did previous owner already replace plate ahead of one with hole ? It looks like newer and different than original.

The tractor had a belt pulley attachment on it when I got it and I have removed it and made a cover out of a piece of aluminum. The edges of the holes are very thin I was able to break a few small pieces off with my fingers. I'm thinking of gluing a piece of rubber on top using silicone.

Make a Plate like the one for the belt pulley and use Black RTV to hold it down. A rubber mat isn't sufficient protection for the Hole. Jim

That transmission cover is thick enough that I'm sure the IH engineers intended for it to be a major part of the structural integrity of the chassis. If it were mine, I would find a cover that has no issues.

battery acid is powerful stuff. I wonder if it has eaten much on the inside bottom of the transmission housing? might be real thin down there
