yes. everything is backwards and needs to be switched/repolarized. search the archives for what you need to do.

That is a good question. I do it out of habit. All my other tractors are negative ground. Keeping it original is probably the best plan

(quoted from post at 11:19:13 01/21/14) Does switching a cub from positive ground to negative ground cause any changes in the charging system wiring.
Why switch?

You can't use a timing light on a pos ground tractor...ask me how I know...

Yes you need to change the regulator if you have a cut-out it will be ok but the reg is made for pos gnd and will probably say so on the bottom of the reg as those were marked such. You will also need to change the leads on the amp guage just keep it pos gnd and then mark it so you will remember as there isnt any reason to change grounds.

(quoted from post at 12:21:08 01/21/14) Depends on the timing light. I have back when I still used them done so.

Makes sense. This was a newer Snap-On light. It went crazy hooked to my SMTA battery, but if we hooked the light to the truck battery and used it on the SMTA it worked fine.

In my old age I need simple and consistent, so have left all 6 volt stuff positive ground and all my 12 volt stuff negative ground.

Ya the ones you have to hook to a battery can do funny things if you hook them up wrong. As in the + clip and the - clip back wards. Now if you hook it up + to + and - to - what ever ground the machine is should not cause any problems

A POS ground regulator will work fine on NEG ground, only difference is relay contact life may be slightly shortened.
Some universal regulators made for either polarity, have the relay contacts made from the same alloy. Those listing a specific polarity have a different alloy on the opposing contacts to slow transfer of metal from one contact to the other, other than that , there is no difference..
Considering the few hours of run time most of these old tractors see, you will never realize any difference by running a regulator marked POS ground on NEG ground.

There you go and it will work just fine they did when they were built and still work but need to be in the same shape as when new just like anything else if it works like it did when new it will still work you dont mess with your cars or pickups changing charging systems so why do it to your tractor.

Nahh, I put AGM batteries and a bigger alternator on there. Also a bigger starter.
