SMD Upper Thermostat Housing

On my '53 SMD, there is a pipe nipple about 1.0" long with a cap that sticks out the exhaust side of the upper thermostat housing. The part number on the housing is 8279D. Can anyone tell me what this nipple is for?

One possible explanation is that perhaps someone had a tank-type water heater on it at one time.

I was looking at the same piece from a 50 M yesterday. Mine has a pipe plug in the same location. Without looking I would say it is 1/4 inch NPT. Maybe half inch but no bigger. Not sure what that's about.

On my 460 there is a bleeder to get air outta the system and
on my 560 that"s where the tank heater hooks in

Housing came with a 3/8 pipe plug installed on the right side.
