Hitachi alternators

Any one know if the Hitachi 14231 and 14255 (more amps) are the same physical size or is the 14255 larger? The 14255 is actually cheaper at O Riley's.

Jim, I just measured the body (not counting mounting lugs) of my Hitachi 14255 and it is roughly 4- 7/8" which is about 125mm. That is only slightly smaller than the Delco 10 which is about 5- 1/4. Where did you get your 74mm?

Looking at the connectors from the back, the Horizontal lug is S or Sense, the Vertical Lug is L or Light.

Sense loops down to output, L goes to Charge inidator light or diode.

Do you need the extra amperage for some exotic high amp draw item? Or is this simply an effort to save a couple bucks because this other alternator is a couple bucks cheaper?

Do keep in mind a higher output alternator is going to rob more engine hp. would not want to sacrifice any hp on a low hp tractor unless truly needed myself.

With respect, the HP draw would only be an issue if both the alternators were used at capacity, most aren't. They just go back to 4 amp output for the ignition after recharging the battery, or in addition to run the lights. the same basic belt power for either. Jim

The 14255 is slightly larger but I decided to use it since it came with the connector but the 14231 doesn't (OReillys).
Here is a diagram showing the connector layout.
Remember too the current specs for alternators are typically at 3000 rpms, which it can't supply on a tractor running at half that engine speed. At 1800 rpms, the output of an alternator is about 60%, so the Hitacha's could supply 21 and 30 amps. And that could only be into a totally discharged battery or a fault.
The other advantage of the Hitachi is it comes with a split belt pulley which can be adjusted to fit a 3/8 belt, the 10si comes with pulley for a 5/16 belt.

Jim, the 69 and 74 are indeed pulley sizes. I checked both of them at Orileys. The 14231 has a body about 1/2" smaller than the 14255. Thanks for everyone's help!!
