A clutch question

It is time to get the mowing tractor in the shop for service while things are slow.

My 47 A has always had clutch issues. It lets out well and doesn't slip, but when you push it in you have to wait forever for things to stop spinning to get it into gear. I have checked the fluid in the rear and it is fine. I know if there is not enough they will spin on for a while.

I have adjusted the clutch to the right amount of play. What's the deal with this clutch? It doesn't leak out from the rear main, so it isn't gobbed up and sticking. Broken springs on the pressure plate?

Well for one there is no clutch brake (2) the trans mission is not a Scycro and you may have a dry pilot bearing that is dragging . Could also be that the splines have rust on them and not allowing the disc to sorta float on the splines and it could be dragging a little on the flywheel or the pressure plate face .

Adjusting the clutch is one thing, but on my "H" tractor I also had to re-adjust the pressure plate fingers. You might check for that. There is an IHClutch Adjustment Manual, you can get in on eBay, the way I read it it specifiecs for an A it can be externally adjusted, to a gap of 1/2" between the fingers and the plate.

you said mower tractor, if you are talking pto driven equipment spinning and the tractor still moving. shift the pto out of gear and see if there is actually a clutch problem or if driven equipment is just flywheeling keeping everything spinning. if this is it- no cure but nature of the beast. that is why you don't stop when you push the clutch and brake also.
