how much lining should be there , approx 1/8 inch above rivets

1/8 above rivets on both sides is practically new. If there are no stress cracks or loose springs, it is good to go. Jim

Make sure the splines on the shaft are clean so it can slide for ward and back with no snags. A little (very little) TriFlow, ot teflon powder spray on the splines halps assure no drag. Lube the pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel. Jim
