1066 engine problems

A Friend of mine has a 1066 with good tires and a new paint job. But, its getting oil in the engine. Pretty sure its the orings in block that are leaking. Is this tractor worth putting a engine/or overhaul in it. Or does he need to just sell it. What would it even be worth with a bad motor? Also what would it be worth with a new motor. Any ideas what to do would be great thx

Well i sure hope it is getting OIL in the engine . Now If it is getting WATER in the oil then more then likely it is due to cavitation of one or more sleeves due to no water filter or not changing the water filter . If it is getting OIL IN THE WATER then the problem is the oil cooler . But if you think it is JUNK then so be it and i would gladly take that piece of junk off your hands and have it back in the field in no more then two weeks.

Sorry typed to fast yes it getting water in the engine oil. And yes I know it from cavitation. We are going to fix it.

As to what its worth with a new or rebuilt engine its hard to say. If you can go by what was posted in the 856 auction price down below and the value of the 1206s (I think a 1066 is a much better tractor than a 1206) you could have a $20-$25K tractor.

In the real world Tractor House has decent and good ones ADVERTISED for $8500 to $14,000.

if there is no damage to the crank you should be able to go all over that engine for $2500.00. Fair price for a good 1066 in mid-west is $7500, higher depending on condition. Good ole mid sized tractor, ran cousin's for years, it gave little trouble

A 1066 is argueably the best tractor ever made. Definitely worth a motor job especally with good tires and new paint. You are looking at a 2 to 3 K investment. Thats not much for a good tractor.I'll buy ti if he doesn't want to fix it. Kent

Pull the pan and see where the coolent is coming from. If it is the orings, you might be able to just replace them. Have done that on a couple of 400 series engines worked great. Take the sleeve and piston out together, that way if it is good you don't have to rering it.

Something to keep in mind about the 400 series engines. The sleeves have three O-rings on them but only the top one does the sealing. The lower two serve to locate the sleeve in the block. If there is erosion in either the block or the sleeve just replacing the O-rings will not result in a satisfactory repair. There are repair sleeves that can be installed in the lower bore of the block to salvage a damaged block. They do require some machine work in the block to be installed.
