H Countershaft Oil Seal Question

Reinders

I am putting back together an H and once I put the transmission fluid in the oil seal on the countershaft nut is bad. I need to replace it, but I am not sure how to remove it. The shaft connecting the hydraulic is removed and the bearing retainer is loose, but I don't want to ruin anything. Does the nut and retainer pry loose or is it threaded. So I need to get back into the transmission to remove the seal? I've attached a picture so you know what I am talking about. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

im doing this on my h right now., remove the 4 tapered bolts that connect the input shaft to transmission. then the 3 bolts that the seal sits in, them remove the bolt from the center of input shaft. Easiest is to put the tractor in gear so it dosent spin on ya. hope this helps

It is right hand thread, put a square bar in it and pry.

Make sure the area where the seal rides is good, or it will leak again. I do not know if a speedy sleeve would work.

Third time is a charm t upload a pic.

David G,

Just so we are on the same page, look at my picture. Put a square bar in that nut and it is right hand thread. Will do, but would a pipe wrench work as well you think?

That coupling is screwed onto the front of the countershaft with standard, right hand threads.

Removal is straight forward: Lock the countershaft from turning by engaging the PTO then holding the PTO shaft with a large pipe wrench. Or remove the shift lever and use a large screwdriver to engage 2 gears at once (reverse and 2nd are my favorites!)

Now grab the coupling nut with another large pipe wrench and tug HARD. Or put a piece of keystock into the slot to act as a lever and give it a good lick with a hammer. Once started the nut will spin off the rest of the way easily by hand.

Suggestion: While you're in there, replace the upper (input shaft) seal too. Good chance it also is worn out.

Thank Bob M, That officially answers my question. I replaced that upper seal, but not the bottom one. Im on the final stages of putting this back together and once I put new tranny oil in, that is when I noticed this one. I didn't want to crank on this hard and break something so thanks for letting me know it is right hand thread.

I took a few minutes and made a special tool for removing the countershaft nut. It was very simple to make I used an old clutch/brake pedal shaft and welded a length of key stock to the side. Here's a picture with the nut on the key. Just make sure it fits before welding. BTDT
