Inner axle bearing--Jim and guys

I did some pricing on the 300 inner axle bearing. The IH dealer said it was $125.00 and did not know the number of bearings in it. Another place had one for 102.00 but only had 10 balls. I ordered one from Motion Industries as everyone recommended and it was $126.00 with 15 balls in it. It is also a covered bearing so I have to pry off the outside covers. When I took mine out it had 16 (I hope because I have no other damage) and since the inner cage retainer was totally gone except for a small piece over 2 balls I found in the big differential drain plug. Thoughts on this????

I used to have all the numbers of those bearing wrote down and how many balls they had in them. That was a big help when you went searching around in the rear to make sure you had them all. Seems to me 16 sounds like a lot for that size bearing but memory is not all that good anymore. You will be fine with your new bearing, but if I could possibly get a look at the bearing in the other side to compare number of balls to make sure you don't have an extra one from some other bearing in side. Bearing has to be exactly the same number with A or B suffix if it has any at all to be sure though. They changed bearings so many times over the years. The differential bearing is same size so you can look at that easier. Number may not be on the correct side though to see it.

The bearing number was a ST218 and IH changed it to an ST218A. All the balls were in the bearing. We took them out through the notches to remove the races.

I have some good used Famall H inner bearings that I could check the ball count if you were interested. I am not sure if they are the same size or not. I usually get $20 plus 6 to mail for them.

Very good. The heaviest duty bearings have what is called a Full complement. to get them in the races, the races have to have a slot for ball loading. A heavy duty might have fewer, but the outer race is deformed to get the last ball in. Lesser bearings have about 11 balls in that size categorie. Jim
