bad voltage regulator

I have a 1954 Farmall Super C tractor with the original 6 volt electrical system. I burned out the original voltage regulator when mice chewed through the original wiring harness. So I replaced all of that, and put a new foreign made voltage regulator on it I bought from Orscheln (Made in Thialand). Well, it didn't last very long and burned out again. I went through the trouble shooting instruction on this site and did all the tests and they point to a bad regulator again. The generator charges at 20 amps when I patch around the voltage regulator. So, my question is, where is the best place to get a good old American made one that will last?

I looked at the one in the link you gave me, but the picture only shows two terminals on it. Mine has 4 terminals on it. Three on one side and one on the other side. And it didn't say if it was positive or negative ground. And I couldn't even find a name for the web site or the company involved? The original voltage regulator lasted me about 55 years. So I think I prefer to replace it with another mechanical one rather than an electronic one. We bought one of those fancy new electronic flat top stove/ovens with a fan in it and have had nothing but trouble with it since we bought it. And the old wood cookstove in the kitchen still works the best and makes the best turkeys at Thanksgiving and raison bread all year long. New is sometimes not better.

Be sure you have the Delco-Remy # on your generator so you get the correct one I get mine from CarQuest as they are USA your gen# should be a 1100501 IF its original if its an 1101423 or 1101355 its a three brush and takes a different one. You never know on an old tractor just what someone has changed and a gen is not always a gen as they did make changes and who knows what has been changed over the yrs. Hope this helps. I just got a reg for the 501 gen for my Cub from CarQuest and it works just fine

If you read the link closely it indicated it is a four terminal regulator which replaces IHC p/n 360898R91 or Delco p/n 1118780 which would be the correct regulator for your tractor. Also at the bottom I see this appears to be an item that Brillmans stocks and sells and they seem to have a very good recommendation among several folks on this forum. You could call them and get the spec's for the regulator as it applies to your tractor.
My Farmall 240 which I am restoring at present uses the same regulator and I obtained mine from CaseIH and think it is noted as being made in Mexico. I put the same regulator on my 1953 Super C several years ago and it has worked flawlessly since it was restored. I'll take a chance on the CaseIH part until one acts up and then I think I might look into the one in Jim's link, Hal.

Thanks for your recommendation on this Hal. Since the tractor has a magneto on it and is so easy to crank start. And a few hours on the battery charger gets me several crank starts ok, even in the winter, I have some time to order one and wait for it. In the winter mostly I just use it for pushing snow with a belly blade on our 1/4 mile driveway, and hauling firewood from the back woods. So I use the tractor quite a bit. And of course it pulls a 6' finish mower on the several acres on our farm in the summer.
