Off-topic a bit, but you guys are a knowledgeable bunch. We are looking for an affordable option to shed two tractors from most weather and are looking at a carport-style shed, open on both ends with full sides.

Opinions about building type aside, have any of you dealt with any of the national distributors for carports (like carports.com)? For example carports.com has an F rating with the BBB. They also have an affiliate program meaning depending on which affiliate you work with, an individual's experience may differ.

Thoughts and feedback appreciated.

I do not know about carport companies but I will say that any
structure that is open on two sides will get a fair bit of rain and a
lot of snow in it around here in northern NY. I don't know how
much wind you get where you are but it might be worth thinking
about before you build.

I live in Northern New York and have a "portable
garage" right now covering my M. It's open on
both ends and lets a fair amount of snow and some
rain in, it is far less than if it were completely
exposed but it does get touched by the weather
thanks to the wind some times. I was planning on
stick building one and using heavy duty canvas
tarps with a hook system (something like what
people use on their stanchion barns) to cover the
ends.

My advice, build one, much cheaper from what I
have seen ($1,000 vs. $2,500+) and you can build
it to your exacting specs. Good luck, ~Anthony

I've been doing some research on carports. A local guy sells the carolina carports brand. I've been through their online configuration utility and they have carports that are tested to withstand some pretty impressive winds and snow loads. IIRC they have a model rated for 150MPH winds, and 50lb/ft snow loads.

From what I've seen you want one that has the ribs on the roofing running parallel to the gable end, not parallel to the peak. They shed water and snow much better. They can be had with any number of walls and doors.

Nate, I don't know where you are located, but I had this carport installed last summer. 2 sides and one end, under $1800.

I just priced one like this without the end, and it was $995 in North Georgia. 18' x 21'
$695 without the walls on the sides.
It comes as a kit and an installer comes out to assembly it. I can't build it myself for that price.

If you go with one of the portable sheds be sure to dig some post holes and add concrete to bolt it to. They do stand up to the wind alright but the builders just drive four ft lengths of re-rod to hold them, as soon as the ground gets a little soft your new shed is in the neighbors driveway on top of their car.

I had two installed that look pretty much like in
the photo "Old Popper" posted. I'm in central NY
and many places around here are dealers with demo
models out front. Outfit was from down south and
a few mexicans came by to install. They were
amazingly fast. Both my car ports were the most
HD available with a 50 lb. snow-load rating. They
both would of collapsed the first winter here if I
hadn't gone out and braced them on the inside with
poles. The dealer near me had his demo cave
completely in with a brand new car inside of it.
Now I brace both of mine every winter. Also -
the installers anchored them with 24" steel rods.
One of mine tore right out of the ground and
landed an 1/8 mile away upside down in one of my
fields.

I'd never buy one again while living in this area.
A moot point anyway. Most areas here now have
buidling codes that won't allow them due to an 80
lb. snow-load requirement.

I had them sink 2 mobile home anchors at the front corners. I think it would blow apart before it would pull those up. Dale

You fellows with car ports must live mostly in the "south"? Up here in the Wis. frozen tundra those things would collapse from snow load, fly away in a real blizzard, and would make a good wind tunnel (and not pass bldg. codes). There would be more snow and ice on our tractors in those things than out on level ground (some of us do have level ground...ha).

Right now, Jan 14, late afternoon, we are getting heavy snow with strong winds. Wild out there but not a real good blizzard. My red stuff is safely in a shed that has 6" of sidewall insulation and 12" on ceiling.

All meetings tonight are cancelled...we have a few timid souls who think driving in snow is not good for them. I love it, fun to fishtail around and hone my driving skills (not on a road, in my yard). At 77 my skills need to be kept sharp to survive up here.

As my neighbor says..."We like our weather, it keeps the riff-raff out".

Now I don"t want you good ol" boys to get upset, I ain"t making fun of you...just trying to cope with winter with a little humor!
