Farmall A Rear Wheel clicking

My very old A is making a loud clicking noise in forward and reverse. Lifted rear end and rotated wheel - no noise. Before I tear it down, is it a bearing? broken dropdown gear? Thanks for your ideas.

Sometimes a loose rim bolt can make strange noises - pops, creaks, squeaks, etc. It"s an easy fix - much easier than tear-down.

Does it make the sound if you freewheel with your foot on the clutch? If you have a broken tooth I would not expect it to make noise except under load. I agree about the rim bolts, that has happened to me before and loose wheel weight bolts is another thing that can do it.

I agree with Davset. Loosen each bolt one quarter (one at a time not all at once.)turn put on some light oil and tighten each to the same place, then tighten them evenly. Jim

Yes, loose rim bolts.

On mine, there was no "tighten" left. I had to take the nuts completely off and add 1-2 extra lock washers to each bolt to get them to tighten down. I plan to replace the bolts some day.

tightened all bolts, still loud clicks. Raised tractor, removed all six bolts, reinstalled with lockwashers. Still makes the noise in forward and reverse. Either a gear or bearing?

Or if you have weights on the back wheels - loose weights will do it too. More of a thud than a click...

If not that - I'd drop the pan from the final drive and make sure the bull gear's got all it's teeth.

(assuming you worked over both the axle hub to wheel, and wheel to rim bolts, and you are convinced it is internal) IF the click is once per revolution, the bull gear might have a chipped or broken tooth. If the click is not once per rev. but more like 10 per revolution, it could be a pinion tooth.
If it is random diagnosis is difficult. I would safely have someone drive it slowly while I rode on the drawbar with a stethiscope to get stronger info. The pand under the finals are pretty easy to remove. Jim
