Farmall M front transmission seal leak!

I have a 1951 Farmall "M" tractor and I am starting to get a pretty good leak from my front transmission seal. It leaves a small puddle of oil on the shop floor. Can you Farmall guys please tell me if this seal can be replaced without splitting the tractor in half?? Is this something the average "tractor guy" could replace, or should I get a good mechanic to do the job?? Is there anything special that I should know about replacing this seal?? Thanks for any advise!!
 
It is a pretty straight forward job that I think can be done without splitting. I would drop the liftall unit then you have more space to work in.

I would ask others about installing a speedy sleeve on the coupling if it is worn.
 
Hardest job is to loosen the driveshaft bolts. They are tapered and hard to loosen. This is how I have "easily" loosened them: 1. Turn shaft(clutch depressed or rotate engine) so bolt is on the bottom, 2. Take a combination wrench and place box end on the bolt head, 3. Remove nut & lock washer with second wrench or socket, 4. Take a larger combination wrench and lock the box end into the open jaw of the first wrench so you have (in effect) a longer wrench. ( this will test the lifetime warranty of the tool!), 5. Place transmission in 1st or reverse (clutch pedal released so engine resists turning) and lock the brakes. 6. Apply firm pressure to turn the tapered bolt; when it "snaps" the bolt can be removed.
You may need a pipe wrench to help hold the shaft &/or coupler from turning. Remove the two bolts on the shaft first and the coupler bolts last.
Heat or hammers, etc. may do the job but simply turning the bolt works so much easier & faster.
 
While your re sealing, replace those two front gaskets as well. I like to use indian head shellac as well to put on the gaskets. Someone on this site might be able to give you the seal numbers too.
