Hey everyone, I have a quick question. Ive been searching for a W9 for years, and have finally found one near me. I havent laid eyes on it, but Im told it was restored a few years ago and shedded ever since. What are some key things to look for on these old beasts? Any known problem areas to look at?

Make sure the rear main seal is not leaking when they have set for a long time without running the seal tends to dry up and than they leak. Its quite a job to replace them

biggest thing is to test drive it and listen to the gears and differential. the w6 was pretty much bullet proof, but the w9 is known for having a weak bull pinion brgs. engine is an engine but those are hard to find parts for also.

Good straight W9"s are getting very hard to find, If you are ok with the price I say go for it. Bearings and seals are avalaible. Used gears if you need them are not to hard to find

Thanks for the responses guys. Are these set up the same way as the other W models? As in you can pull the clutch and flywheel out the top?

Heads crack. Check for water/coolant in the oil. Engine still free to turn? Look for bubbles in coolant when running.

Roger, you say the heads crack. How big of an issue is this/how often does it happen? And it "runs great" I was told. Ive been in the tractor world long enough to know what that could mean.

i have a w-9, never had a problem with the head. the wd9 as all the start on gas diesels were prone to head cracking if they were shut down hot. the 9 is a very comfortable tractor to operate. i have power steering on mine.

Glennster, that makes me feel alot better about these. Im hoping the fellow doesnt want an arm and a leg for it.

heres a few pics of my 9 pulling a 14ft kewaunee disk.

rear inners have the evil calcuim chloride in em for ballast. i have about 10 cast iron weights for er too, but at about 220 lbs each, i aint gonna schlep em on there.

Glennster, thats an impressive picture. Love the duals! How much of a workout is that disk for that big girl?

i pull it in 3rd fine. she'll snort in 4th and pull it, but, im a lot happier in 3rd. i used to have a 3-18 oliver trailing plow that pulled nice behind.

if its been rebuilt, an engine o-h gets real pricey on the 9's. just the pistons and sleeves will set you back 12-1400 if you can find em. a solid good running 9 with decent tires should go for 3-4k.

I dont know if its been OH'd or not. The fellow said that he has alot of money in it, so we'll see.

W9 Gas Models Are Harder But Not Hard To Find As A Collector I Have About 2 Dozen Of Them That Are Loose Or Running I Am Open To Sell A Few A lot Are From The West And Very Clean But No Paint Email Is Open

Head on mine has all four cylinders cracked and pinned. Tried finding a good head one time. Pulled four heads and all were cracked! Pinning them seems to work. These were all gassers. Big thing is to let them warm up before heavy loads and let them cool down before shutting off. May still crack.

Good looking tractor. Ground looks HARD. Disk is just scratching it. What size tires on the rear of tractor? Running 18.4 x34 rice on my WR9.

Well fellas, I went and saw this W9 saturday. Im gonna pull the trigger on it. Its in really nice shape. Has a PTO driven hydraulic pump on it, and the seller has all the pieces to put live hydraulics on it. It also has big ugly factory wheel weights on the inside and outside. He was also kind enough to share pictures of all the IH tractors hes had in the past. Pretty sure hes had 1 of everything haha. Sorry for the rant, Im just really pumped about this.

I have a w9, had stuck piston, now in need of sleeve and piston with 4.5 bore on sleeve, the block has a bore of 4.630, any help would be appreciated, red duck
