2 Bottom Plow

As I am new to the Farmall world, I need to find a 2 bottom plow. I'm not familiar with trailer plows but I would like one I can still buy parts for. I know Oliver parts are available but what else? Does anyone have one for sale? I would be willing to travel if there is a good plow waiting for me.

I have a couple plows I would sell. I have a IH fast hitch plow 2 bottom disk type which is very heavy but works well. I also have an Oliver 2-16 trailer plow with the rope trip set up. But I am in Missouri

My suggestion would be to find a Little Genius #8 plow. Parts for them crop up quite frequently yet. IH made this plow for so long, that getting a good one that isn't thrashed is relatively easy.

Dave8N,

If you want IH then I agree with the #8 Little Genius suggestion. They are "everywhere" and some are in good enough shape that with a little TLC they can be made whole again. Some of the newer models (#16?) have better trash clearance.

What year of tractor do you intend to pull a plow with? Do you want the tractor and plow to be matching in a period of age?

Check with farmers you know, or keep watching for farm auctions, watch for ads in rural newspapers, go to tractor shows in the summer months and ask around and on this site on the left side (classified and photo ads). I also think there are several in your area sitting in the weeds (or hopefully in a machine shed)...but you have to spread the word and keep searching.

I suggest getting a "rope trip" model just for simplicity sake....for a rookie that is the easiest way to get started. An earlier model (#4) was popular also in it"s day. Buying parts can be problematic, buying a 2nd plow for parts is a common solution.

I occasionally buy old IH plows at farm auctions, fix them up, plow with them to get the moldboards shined up, and then sell them; I do this just for a hobby. I have a nice #8 2-14" rope trip now ready to go, but you have to come to sunny and warm Wisconsin to get it! I don"t really want to sell it....I plan to pull it at our plow day in April just to see how it goes and what I need to adjust.

I wish you well in your search. Plowing with an old tractor and an old plow is the closest to heaven I"ve been able to get so far!

Thanks LA, I have a 1941 Farmall H and an 8N ford. Just got the H. I've made 2 years with the little Ford and I enjoy farming. So now I'm going a little bigger. I couldn't find a Ford plow so I built a 1 bottom Oliver 3 point hitch plow for the 8N. Now I want a good plow for the H. I finally found planters for both tractors. I have a disc for the Ford and a 3 section spring tooth for the H. I have a 1PR picker and a gravity wagon. I also have a cultivater for the 8N. It's a start. Now I have 90 tillable acres and looking for a little more. I also bought an Allcrop 60. I can probably do ok with what I have if I can find a good plow.

Thank you Plowman, Ohio is not that far. I live 250 miles from Youngstown. Can you still buy parts for IHC plows? How much do you want for your plow?

If by "parts" you mean wear parts like shares, moldboards, shins, landsides, etc... You do NOT want a stock Little Genius #8 if you plan on doing a lot of plowing!

Wear parts are NOT readily available for the old "quick change" or "blacksmith" bottoms. Most parts are also not readily available for the "Plow Chief" style bottoms.

The only IH plow parts that are still available are for the modern "Super Chief" style bottoms.

The one saving grace in the whole deal is that the bolt pattern for mounting the bottoms to the plow beams is the same all the way up from the Little Genius to the plows being made today. You can find a modern parts plow with Super Chief bottoms on it, and transfer them to the Little Genius plow frame. That gives you the period-correct plow look, and modern plow parts availability.

Yes sir, that is the problem with most of the plows I've found. My Amish neighbors use saw-tooth Oliver's and they have a steady supply of parts at pretty good prices. I think Oliver is what I want for that reason. Last year I bought a new bottom for about $300. That was complete, frog to trash board. They should always have parts, at least as long as I will need them. I have fond a lot of plows for free but I don't know what they are and don't know if parts are still made.

I have an Oliver 2-14 Plowmaster that could use a good home. It has fresh shares, shins, landsides & a few spares that go with it. I do have the original operators manual as well as a few parts catalogs, too. Paint ain't perfect, but it's still red. I do have a couple of pics, but don't know which computer they're on. Might take a minute to find them..

Emails open if you're interested.

Well, you learn something new every day. So I take it that the plow bottom complete will bolt to a Genius plow? If this is indeed the case, I wonder if this also applies to the Little Wonder plows. Too, since I have a very nice original Genius plow on steel that I plan to use, it may be a good idea to mount newer bottoms to it to use, and save the original bottoms.

Hey Dave, I have a 2 bottom plow I would be willing to part with. I actually have 2. I fixed the one up and it turns good just doesnt look good. The other is a #8 that the point fell off of and I need to take my metal detector down to find but its there. Send me an email if you want some pics. I'm also in PA. In New Florence if you live close.
