Need good, bad and ugly of one of these tractors. Have a chance to buy one but no nothing about IH tractors other than they can be hard to start or the TA's can be expensive to repair. Thanks

cant go wrong with a 544 really good handling little tractor ,ta repair. should be around 1500. most 544 go between 4500. and as high as 6500 depending on shape , i am going to look at one. sat asking price 5500. this tractor was put together by ih when they had left over transmission an rear ends from the 656 tractors that had 6 celender ,

Thanks. Will look at this one. Nice rear rubber with duals,canopy/rollbar,3 point and decent paint. Less than 3k.

Farmall 544 will be a row crop type tractor (basically a 656 with a 4cyl motor instead of a 6 cyl motor and obviously a few less hp).

International 544 will be a utility tractor that sits lower than a Farmall model . Could be had with a gear tranny or hydro tranny.

I am thinking you are looking at an International 544 instead of a Farmall 544 since you said hydro tranny.

A 544 is the replacement of the 504 and are 4 cylinder. They made both in rowcrop and utility models. They are a good handy little tractor. A hydro can be expensive to repair though.

Hydros are good tractors.I've owned 3.Still own one.Test by letting it get to opperating temps.Set throttle at full.Put trans in High range. Then while brakeing, move SR lever ahead full,it should kill or nearly stall engine. As far as being 'expencive',try OH'ing a John Deere power shift.Hydros have a bad rap because people dont know how to run them. They are capapable of any work from plowing to haying. The biggest is a little more fuel consumpion. Its funny how all the naysayers have never owned/used a Hydro..

Wow, sounds like a heck of a deal. I haven't be able to find one within a hundred miles of me for less than 5500.

(quoted from post at 19:49:47 01/02/14) Okay guys, sounds like I should get it. Can I put a Dunham 22 loader on it with no problems?

Depends on what a "Dunham 22 loader" is. Was it designed to fit a 544? If not, then it depends on your definition of "problems."

Anything can be made to fit with enough time, a torch, a welder, and some scrap metal.
