Gas cap gauge problem

This is a gas cap gauge off of my 53 Farmall Super H. It seems the vent is plugged.

I've had problems with my tractor dying for no apparent reason. With the vent plugged it created a vacuum and shut the fuel off to the carb. It would start and run fine after a few minutes. Took me a while, several months, to figure it out. I've replaced the cap and the problem went away.

The question is how do you clean the vent?

Push a small wire or awl through it''Drill' it out with a small bit.Blow hi pressure compressed air through the hole.

Cool gas cap. Can you have them made to fit different tank sizes? is this only for Farmall tractors. Have a yellow AC model D motorgrader that needs a gas cap guage like that one but it is twice the length/depth. Get tired of loosing my stick guage and having to find a new one. thanks for your help. email me with the info and I'll call you too.

It's something that IH offered as an accessory at one time. They are highly desirable and will bring hundreds of dollars on ebay.

At one time OEM tractor parts had a batch of reproductions made but they have long since sold out.

I do recall reading a post or article online somewhere of someone who made one himself, out of a replacement gas cap. I'm sure you could find someone to make you one but it would be very expensive.

(quoted from post at 06:34:08 01/02/14) So you are saying I shouldn't throw away the one I have that had the float go bad?

The float can be easily replaced. It's just a piece of cork.

How do you get it apart to change the float? The cork is bad on mine and I have a new float but I can't figure out how to get it apart to change the float.

I also have one on my 350D. I was able to clean it up and make it work when I restored the tractor several years ago. It works fine, but the thing I don't like about it is that when you put in fuel, you have to take it out while it is dripping diesel fuel and set it someplace clean so you don't put any dirt back in the tank. I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but probably is not as much of a problem with a gas tank. Roger

Need to get a new cork for mine. Feeding cows yesterday and next thing I know am hoofing it back to house to get some gas. 450 must drink a lot.

I have the same concerns when I run across them.
