Transmission bell housing case interchangeability

I have a 1946 farmall a with a cracked bell house case. The cast # is 8638-DC. I have opportunity on a parts tractor but the case is cast #8638-DE. Does anyone know what is different between these two casts and if they are interchangable? Thanks Jim

If they are both off an A or a B they will work just fine. Now if it is off an early A it might not have the hole for the starter so look at that

DE is newer than DC. DE should be compatible with DC. Many of the parts I get from CaseIH have later letters on them -- usually I can't see the difference.

Thanks for the info guys. I do have pics of the DE and it does have the starter hole so looks like it is an option for me. Thanks, Jim
