Belt Pully Attachment

How hard is it to remove the whole unit? The drawing in the service manual shows about 6 or 7 mounting bolts and the shift lever. I tried two make it run when I got the tractor but it didn't seem to engage. I'm thinking if something is wrong with it, maybe it's worth looking at before I pull the top cover. Could it be the reason for trans. to lock-up?

What model tractor?

Most just unbolt and lift off.

You can make sure the gear is sliding when the lever is pulled if you remove it.

Gary, I have a 1941 H and the trans seems to be lock-up. Before I go to deep, I'm going to try all the simple stuff. The pulley didn't work before so I'm wondering if it came apart and is causing lock-up?

well if the trans is locked then you are stuck in 2 gears at once. remove the gear shifter and re- align the shift rails with a cat bar. this is the simple fix, but your shifter end will need building up to cure the problem.

I suppose that if the pulley gearbox was frozen and the gear slid on the shaft and meshed with the input shaft gear it could lock up the transmission. I don't know why it would suddenly mesh when it hadn't before, but it is certainly possible. If you pull the belt pulley drive unit you can see the front end of the shift rails and much of the internal parts of the transmission. There are four short bolts and two long bolts that hold the unit down, after that you just have to wiggle it loose and remove it.

As soon as the rain stops I'm going back to the farm. The first thing I plan to do is pull the shifter and check the rails. The shifter seems to work just right but I'm going to check it anyway. If the rails are lined up, I'm going jack up one wheel and rock it back and forth. If that doesn't work I'm pulling the belt pulley attachment off to see if something came apart. I'm not familiar with the hyd. pumps on an H but that will be next. I want to try every possibility before pulling the top cover. But the shifter feels like it working just right in all gears. I hope it is as simple as a little welding. Thanks for your input, most folks here think your probably right.

Dave, I have been reading your progress. If you have no issue with the shifter. Just trowing out something? Has his tractor been left out in the rain? Has it been left out in the cold? Could it be a chunk of Ice in the tranny? This is
something you have to add to your trouble shoting list in the winter. oldiron29

Yes sir, but at the time I had been picking corn for a while and it was up in the forties. Thanks for your thoughts but I doubt it was ice.

Unbolt it, lift it off. You will have to take the back fuel tank support out. They make a delete plate to cover the hole.

Do you really need to pull the rear gas tank support?

We put a belt pulley on my Super H, and it slid right in from the side, plenty of room, even with the 7" bolts. You have to remember to put the 7" bolts in before you slide it in, but other than that no problem.

I seriously doubt that the belt pulley came apart. There just isn't that much there to go wrong.
