I broke it! Please Help

I was picking corn with my H and it clogged the picker. So I cleared the picker and tried to start picking again. It wouldn't turn the PTO shaft. It stalled the motor. So I disengaged the PTO eased the clutch out and the stalled again. I put trans. in neutral and it still stalls the motor. No noise, or vibration but it stalls the motor. It is setting in the field and I don't know what to think except maybe it's stuck in 2 gears. Thanks for your help in advance. I really need help. Rain is coming tomorrow.

I would say you could be in two gears, to check just knock out the pin or remove the bolt and pull out the shifter. You can see the slots where the shifter tip rides and see if they are all lined up. Sounds to me like you could have damaged the constant mesh gears in the transmission so they are unable to turn, or maybe the PTO is not disengaging inside. If the tractor is in neutral when you check then I think the problem has to be in the input shaft, hydraulic pump, PTO or countershaft areas since they are all that is connected to the engine when you let out the clutch in neutral.

If it is in neutral when you pull the shift lever it should roll, since the main shaft is the only one in the transmission that would be turning along with the wheels.

Hi
if you are stuck in between 2 gears the wheels may turn but one will go forward and the other will probably try going backwards through the diff.

Basically it will either skid or take the teeth of the 2 locked gears ,if your not careful.
Had a guy got a tandem freight liner, loaded with 800 or so bushels of flax seed stuck between 2, couldn't tow it or move it. Had to get a big 4wd caseIH and gently ease it back up the slope a few inches, to get the load off the gears ,to move the shifter back to neutral. His selectors are pretty worn causing it to lock the 2 gears.
Regards Robert

Dave, when the tractor dogged down,Ill bet you very quickly slaped the gear shift, causing it to go into 2 gears at one time. You need to get it in netural, pull it to the barn where its easy to work on.While your at it have someone or yourself if able take a welder and build up the shift fork. This is a normal problem and fix for these old tractors. Some where in the archives is a picture of what the fork is supose to look like when welded

In two gears at once.Common problem, simple fix.No need to drag/haul it to the shop.As Zach said, pull out the shifter 'stick'.Look down at the rails see wich one is out of line.take a big screwdrier or bar and pop things back into place.Reinstall stick. You yanked/jerked/slammed it between gears?Yes?The little knob/ball is worn.A little build up of weld is in order. If other things are at play, thats a hole 'nother ballgame......

all good ideas. i have a c farmall that does this. please, stop, take a jack and jack up one of the rear wheels; completely off of the ground, then rock the wheel a bit to take pressure off of the tranny. if your luck is good, teh tranny will shift.

this is the easiest way.

Jimmy, thanks for your help, but no I didn't jam it. It was setting still while I cleared the picker. I engaged the PTO, let the clutch out and the motor stalled. It also won't move the tractor forward or backward.

Thanks Red, I don't doubt there is plenty of wear and tear on a 1941 trans. As it was setting still, I don't think I jammed it. But thanks for the good advise.

It shouldn't be stuck in TWO gears with the lever in neutral, only one. putting the lever in neutral it should move in the gear it's stuck in.

I just came back from the farm. It's freezing rain now so I won't be able to do anything else today. I moved the stick thru all the gears and it all feels normal. When the rain is over I will pull the stick out and check the rails just to be sure. Thanks for your advise.

Yes sir, I tried that this morning. The PTO shaft in the tractor turns freely when disengaged and won't turn when engaged. So I tried the starter with the clutch out and it hits solid. With the clutch in the motor starts. Thanks you for your advise

Can you turn the engine crankshaft backwards with the clutch engaged? It is possible that you broke a tooth or more off the constant mesh gears in the transmission.

If the transmission was in neutral when it happened, then it's not stuck in two gears.

Something came apart and got jammed in the gear train. Probably a ball bearing slipped out of its races and dropped down between two gears.

You might be able to get it to "spit out" whatever's jammed in there by putting the tractor in a forward gear, and pulling it backwards with the clutch pedal pushed. If it doesn't start rolling right away, don't try to force it.

Otherwise you're going to have to figure out some way to skid it back home on logs or slide it up on a trailer or something to get it out of the field.

If it was a Super H you could pull one of the bull pinions which would completely disconnect the differential from the transmission, which should allow it to roll in most cases.
