Hi everyone, I am in the middle of sanding and painting my 1937 Farmall F12 and I noticed that there is a layer of white paint above the red paint and I can find the white paint all over the tractor. It is a 1937 model which is when they began to switch over to the F14, this tractor has all the F14 upgrades and the serial plate says the governor is the F14 governor with the higher engine speed but it says it is an F12. My question is did they ever make a white F14 or F14 demonstrator like they did with the Farmall C? Thanks and Happy New Year.

No, not that I know of. What you are probably seeing is primer from a previous paint job. Additionally, it is hard to tell what combination of F12/F14 options were original from the factory, and what may have been added on later. Unless you are dealing with a 1 owner tractor, and that owner can tell you they never changed anything, it is anyone's guess.

Remember, IHC offered F14 upgrade field kits to update F12 tractors. You won't be able to tell if the farmer did it, the dealer did it, or the factory did it.....unless you can talk to the person who bought it.

Okay, thanks. I just wondered since it is the top
layer of paint, there is no paint on top and the red
is underneath the white. I know it had the F14
governor factory because the serial plate says it
has the higher engine speed, I think it is 1600
while the F12 is 1400. True, I thought it might be
factory since it was the year they began to change
over and I know some tractors were made from extra
parts as they switched to the F14. Thanks.

No white "demonstrator" as such from the factory but dealers did sometimes paint tractors white for special displays starting in the 20s. There is photographic evidence we have found. So it is possible that was done with yours.

Thanks. Is there any chance you could post the link for one of these photos so i can see? So would the "proper" color just be the IH Red or would the white be considered the proper color? Thanks.

FarmallCT, why not register and become a member. Then you can post some pictures of what you are finding. Cowman makes a good point that some dealers did do that. However, anyone can paint a tractor white. Patina of the paint, how many coats, etc all have bearing on what you may have.

It does seem reasonable, if the white is overtop the red. However, that is also not a clincher either. I know for a fact that a lot of not so honest people have painted Cubs and C's white and marketed them as Demonstrator's, when they really weren't.

It is very possible that a dealer did the paint job, but it is going to be hard to validate that definitively.

Register and post some pics. cowman and rusticredacres and some others here are excellent sources for what is validated fact vs what many people may think. I know I certainly don't have all the answers, and I do a bit of research and have been blessed with acquiring a couple of 1 owner originals.
