Okay, Let's Think This Through

Say for instance, a tractor has an ignition resistor and I happen to put on one of those coils with the built in resistor......

Wonder how the silly thing would act? Backfire flames out the exhaust and hard starting cold?

Got to thinking 'bout that the other day when it was so darned cold. Had to hold the starter engaged to keep 'er running.

I'll swap that coil out.

Thanks,

Allan

Sounds more like the sw was cold as you held the starter position the voltage is routed to the coil so the starting volts isnt dropped to the coil when key is in starting position. Next time put a volt meter on the input side of the coil and watch the reading when cranking using jumpers hooked to the voltmeters leads ive seen those turnkey sw rob the coil volts when key is in the start position. Funny things happen to switches in cold weather maybe a spray of elect cleaner will help

This is on my Hydro 70 Gene,

Has it's own dedicated starter button and the ignition switch is relatively new.

Sure Allan, we can think this through.......

I can tell you how it would act, VERY BADLY the spark would be weak as coil voltage and current is gonna be less then it was designed for.

On a 12 volt tractor using a 6 volt coil, the ballast drops the 12 volts from battery down to 6 so the 6 volt coil sees what it was designed for, 6 volts, and a good spark.

BUT if on a 12 volt tractor you keep the ballast BUT USE A 12 VOLT COIL the coil sees quite a bit less voltage and current then it was designed for so the spark IS WEAK.

Id say symptoms may be hard to start and poor performance.........

There ya go we done thought it through !!!!!

The resistor is in the wiring harness in the form of a resistor wire from starter solenoid back to junction block. The double wire on solenoid.

OH you did not tell me that one , ah with out me going out and usen the heat gun for twenty min. to thaw the truck out to get to my books that tractor MAY or may not have the resistor wire from the key switch to the coil and if it does and it also has a resistor that someone else installed could compound the problem . So IF anybody has the wiring for a 70 hydro look it up for Allen . as at the moment i am not really in any shape to go play with electricity and things that get hot . As i had to bow to the lady's of the house and do a Carhart cook out this evening with Tee bone and porter house stakes and to fight the 15 degrees we had to tweak the blood level anti freeze a little , then my oldest said here Daddy try this here wine then the youngest said here try this here wine , Yep i am working on the Holiday spirit . or is that Spirit's

Also remember there is no actual resistor in a coil designed for no external resistor required. It is just designed to operate on higher voltage, with more and thinner wire on the primary. Merry Christmes. Jim
